UH Manoa Geology Activity

Thank you very much to Professor Rowland and Emily First for coming to share their seismology activity. This is the same activity they use for the undergraduate class, so the skills the 8th graders are developing are rigorous indeed.


Here is the seismograph for the straight line. Identify the time at which each geophone picked up the P-wave, record that on page 1, and then graph it on page 2. This allows you to estimate the speed of the seismic waves in the ground.


Here are the two mystery earthquake epicenters. You should have already plotted out the 11 geophones (looks like a hook). Identify the time at which each geophone picked up the P-wave, and estimate the distance away from the epicenter. Then, using a compass, triangulate the epicenter and provide the final estimation.
