Density is a property of matter, calculated by dividing the mass by volume. By understanding density, one can start understanding the movement of matter in the atmosphere and in the oceans. Denser materials "sink" while less dense materials "float."
The movement of air through the troposphere helps explain our weather and climate patterns. For example, the sun warms the air near the equator, which rises upwards, which is replaced by cooler air from the tropics. This creates the trade winds that help cool down Hawaii on most days.
