8.8.1 and 8.8.2 Three Types of Rocks and the Rock Cycle
The geologic Earth is constantly changing. Conservation of mass and energy tells us that rocks can never be destroyed, but are instead reformed anew. All it takes is heat, pressure, erosion, compaction, etc., and above all else, time. Understanding the rock cycle is useful in determining where rocks came from and what they might become in the future.
Mankind has found many uses for the different types of rocks, from granite countertops to marble statues to salt caves. The next time you head to Home Depot, take a moment to check out the different types of rocks.
